ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A new law aiming to crack down on drivers with an extreme need for speed is already being enforced in the state.
Just minutes after a new "Super Speeder" law went into effect, Orange County deputies said they stopped a driver going over 100 mph.
"You were doing 104 coming up behind me," the deputy told the driver. "As of three minutes ago, it is now an arrestable offense to do in excess of 100 mph in the state of Florida.
Deputies did not say if the driver was arrested, and didn't release their name.
According to the new law, a first-time offense can land drivers in jail for up to 30 days and fine them up to $500. Drivers with repeated offenses could end up behind bars for up to 90 days and fined up to a $1,000.
"Do not go over 100 mph or we will take you to jail," Sheriff John Mina said. "We will put you in handcuffs, and we will take you to jail. And no one wants that, so just slow down. It's for your safety and ours."
