LAND O' LAKES, Fla. (WFLA) — Pasco County Animal Services announced Friday that it is restricting rescue dog intakes for 14 days due to several positive cases of canine pneumovirus.
PCAS said it will remain open for specific services such as surgeries, cat adoptions, rescue transfers, vaccine and microchip clinics, pet licensing, and owner-requested euthanasia.
The shelter will resume normal operations May 3.
"Our team is closely monitoring the dogs, providing care and testing to ensure healthy results. While highly contagious to other dogs, the pneumovirus is not contagious to other species including humans and cats," said a release from PCAS.
"However, it may spread to dogs through contact with people who have been exposed to the virus. Based on guidance from veterinary professionals, we believe this virus may be present in our community."
PCAS said that if your pet is exhibiting symptoms such as coughing, fever, lethargy, sneezing, nasal discharge or conjunctivitis, you should get them checked out at the vet.
